Attorney and Partner

Bio

Partner | Certified Specialist, Estate Planning, Trust & Probate Law

David Humphrey is the preeminent estates and trust litigator in the Coachella Valley, widely recognized for handling the region’s most complex, high-stakes inheritance disputes. He represents trustees, beneficiaries, fiduciaries, and families in contested trust and probate matters where the financial stakes are substantial, the relationships are strained, and the consequences of missteps are lasting.

In addition to litigation, Mr. Humphrey serves as a private professional trustee and executor for trusts and estates with complex and high-value asset portfolios. He is frequently selected to administer estates involving closely held and family-owned businesses, significant real estate holdings, investment and operating companies, and other illiquid or unique assets. His approach emphasizes neutrality, foresight, and dispute prevention—particularly in situations where family dynamics and financial complexity intersect.

Mr. Humphrey also advises high-net-worth individuals and families on sophisticated estate planning, with a particular focus on the transition of valuable family-owned businesses. His planning work addresses governance, control, tax efficiency, and generational continuity, informed by a practical understanding of how businesses actually operate—not just how they appear on paper.

Unlike many estate planning and litigation attorneys, Mr. Humphrey is himself a successful businessman, bringing real-world insight into ownership, risk, cash flow, valuation, and decision-making. That experience informs both his planning and fiduciary work, allowing him to anticipate business-level consequences and family-level conflicts that traditional legal analysis alone often misses.

A State Bar of California–certified specialist in Estate Planning, Trust, and Probate Law, Mr. Humphrey has handled matters ranging from modest family trusts to estates exceeding $50 million and $100 million in value. His practice includes the discreet representation and administration of trusts and estates associated with prominent figures in the music and entertainment industries, where confidentiality, judgment, and precision are essential.

Mr. Humphrey also serves as a Temporary Judge, making him the only Trust and Estates Certified Specialist in the Coachella Valley currently entrusted with judicial responsibilities in this field—an uncommon distinction that reflects the court’s confidence in his experience, neutrality, and command of fiduciary law.

Before joining Cosgrove, Humphrey & Weisman in 2007 and becoming a partner in 2010, Mr. Humphrey practiced business and trademark litigation in Long Beach, California. That background continues to shape his strategic approach to trust litigation, fiduciary administration, and business-focused estate planning

.

Mr. Humphrey is also a respected educator who regularly teaches other attorneys on advanced estate and trust litigation and administration through organizations such as the National Business Institute and Becker Tax Institute. His lectures focus on fiduciary duties, trust administration disputes, post-mortem tax issues, and emerging developments in estate and trust law.

Deeply committed to the community, Mr. Humphrey has served as President of the Indian Wells Rotary Club the youngest president in the organization’s history as well as President of the Desert Estate Planning Council. He is a graduate of Leadership Coachella Valley and currently serves on the board of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Desert. He is a proud graduate of the University of Southern California.
